Old Mutual’s Main Mo Sista
While Movember might be focused on the Mo Bros who are hard at work sprouting hair on their top lips in the name of men’s health awareness, but let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be the success it is today without all the Mo Sistas offering their encouragement and support.
One such Mo Sista is Sharon Classen, an Old Mutual Product Operational Consultant, who believes that with a little bit of education and a lot of talking, we can transform ignorance and stigma into acceptance and action.
She knows just how important it is to educate men and women on male health problems such as prostate and testicular cancer.
“They’re not necessarily old men’s diseases,” she points out, adding that there are still so many misperceptions surrounding male cancers.
“It’s important to acknowledge that men too are prone to the dreaded ‘C’. By creating awareness others can become informed,” she explains on her own profile on the Movember site.
She’s right, of course. The World Health Organisation strongly encourages cancer education to ensure early detection which drastically increases the chances of successful treatment.
Knowing what symptoms to look out for and then getting going for a check-up at a doctor are key to ensuring more men get better treatment.
“It’s time I put myself out there, network, and get people going and thinking,” Classen says, adding that it’s by talking about it that we’ll remove the stigma surrounding male health problems.
She’s been true to her word, sending out internal emails to colleagues, updating her Movember page and generally making sure that no one she meets walks away without hearing something about Movember.
Most importantly, she believes we need to direct our education at the youth. “There is life beyond cancer,” she adds.
