Thanks for joining me for another episode of Old Mutual Live Wine edition, I’m Jenny Crwys–Williams . Sommelier Joakim Blackadder, has chosen our final wine for November and Joakim Blackadder’s wines will see us right through the holiday season in great style. What, I wonder, has he chosen for the final weekend in November? Will it by chance be a 2013 wine?
Christmas is around the corner, the beach is beckoning for people who are far from the sea, I guess the mountains are as well. But right at the end of November and all of the wines you’ve chosen for us this month, I think would work incredibly well throughout December. The weather is more or less the same anyway.
A perfect December Cabernet Sauvignon
Joakim Blackadder: Correct, it’s warm everywhere. I did choose something with a little bit more depth and body and density for the last week. Every now and then when it’s an evening we want to have a more serious red wine, so I brought the 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 up. Cabernet is one of the grape varieties that really perform so well in Stellenbosch.
But it’s also a variety that can sometimes fail a bit in the sense that it goes quite green if it’s not treated right. This Cabernet is really the top of the Spier wine production and Spier is not a small farm. It’s quite impressive what Frans manages to do with his small, unique batch of Cab. This is all about purity and freshness of the Cabernet, without going green.
It’s a very smart wine, quite earthy, dark fruit, dried herbs, but it finishes with freshness and that I think is the most important thing with any wine. You need a refreshing finish, otherwise you’re not going to have more than half a glass.
JCW: Yes, otherwise you get the feeling that it’s just knocked you out.
JB: Yes, it gets heavy and boring. You want to feel almost tempted to open a second bottle at the end of the first.
JCW: I think you’re a man after my own heart! That’s the Spier 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, obviously an outstanding year.
JB: Yes, fantastic, 2013 is just proving itself both in whites and reds to be something quite stunning. It’s very much a more delicate vintage. It’s not going to be the biggest blockbuster like 2009 or 2003 was, or 2012 for that matter. 2013 much more refined flavours, but for those producers that are looking for precision. 2013 is just stunning, it’s one of my favourite vintages of late.
JCW: I’ve loved Joakim Hansi Blackadder’s choice of wines. Thanks so much Joakim, more sommelier wine choices in 2017, so join us again for another episode of Old Mutual Live Wine edition. On mobile, on digital and on demand.
