On this edition of the podcast, last week Thursday at the public tasting of the 2015 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show at the Sandton Convention Centre, in Johannesburg; I caught up with another one of the producers. This time it was a silver medal winner and went down very, very well at the public tastings, I might add as well. I caught up with Thomas from Oneiric and they won a silver for the Oneiric Sauvignon Blanc 2012 and this is our little chat that we had last week Thursday.
We’re in the public tasting hall, Thomas from Oneiric with us. Thomas, you mentioned your surname, give it to us slowly.
Thomas von Ahlefeld: It’s von Ahlefeld.
BB: Tell us a bit about Oneiric and you guys are here on the show, obviously a fantastic range of wines that you guys have got, but what have you got to taste here tonight?
TVA: Yes, this evening I’ve got the Sauvignon Blanc. Oneiric is Greek for ‘what dreams may come’. We went for that name, we visited Greece and we really enjoyed the culture and the people and the language and everything, which is why we went with Oneiric. We’re based in Elgin in the Western Cape, the Elgin Valley. Fantastic area for Sauvignon Blanc, because of the cooler climate; we get a crisper, more refined, clean, fresh flavour from our Sauvignon Blanc variety. Yes, it’s lovely accents of grapefruit, asparagus on the palette, lovely nose of green apples, also the fresh cut green grass, a fantastic classic Sauvignon Blanc.
What role does labelling play in wines?
BB: It’s still early days here tonight, so far, but how’s the wine been taken too, are people loving it?
TVA: Yes, there’s obviously been mixed reviews on it, but the people are enjoying it. The label has gone down well and the ladies like the label, they like the colour, the gents not so much so.
BB: Tell us a little bit about the thinking behind that label?
TVA: There’s mining in the history of the family, so we went with the oxidized malachite colour. With the roofs that we have, the copper look, that was the thinking behind it. With the other labels you’ll see, we’ve also used the same trend, but we thought that was a great colour for the Sauvignon Blanc.
BB: Fantastic and as far as you personally, I mean what wines do you love drinking?
There is something classic about a white wine
TVA: I’ve recently just really taken a liking to the white wines, the Sauvignon Blanc has been a classic and I’m really enjoying that.
BB: Your involvement with the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, as an estate. You guys have obviously won an award this year, you must be proud of that, it’s a great show to be involved in.
TVA: Yes fantastic, we’re really pleased to have been involved. We’ve had a lot of fun and we’re really enjoying it.
BB: Awesome, Thomas, thank you so much for your time. Enjoy tonight, I think it’s going to be a goodie.
TVA: It will be, thank you very much, have a good evening.
