Skills Capacity Development

The shortage of skills is one of the most difficult aspects facing South Africa’s economic future. Our interventions in this area seek to provide skills that will lead to job placement or increase the capacity of projects to create sustainable jobs. Generally, we will focus on the following areas:

  • Business skills to enable emerging and micro-enterprises become financially sustainable, thereby increasing job opportunities
  • Accredited trade, artisan, or sector support skills that will result in permanent job placement and stable income.
  • Agricultural skills leading to the establishment of micro-enterprises supporting food security and poverty alleviation.

CASE STUDIES

1. SA College of Tourism (SACT)

As the training provider for the Peace Parks Foundation, the SA College of Tourism in Graaff Reinet, Eastern Cape offers accredited training in tourism and hospitality for young women and tracking skills for young men. Over 100 youth are trained annually and successful graduates can secure employment with organisations such SANParks and safari lodges such as Singita, Londolozi, Samara, Thornybush.

2. People’s Upliftment Programme(POPUP)

POPUP (People Upliftment Programme) is a faith-based organisation originally started in 2000 as a shelter for the homeless, however grew to offer nine accredited skills training programmes built on a foundation of holistic personal life skills and improved adult literacy, as a means of offering a lasting way out of dependency. In 2015, Old Mutual Foundation provided funding to train 40 people as Home-based Caregivers where qualified graduates can secure employment in old age homes, hospices, or as private caregivers.

3. Sparrow FET College

Sparrow FET College (Further Education & Training) based in Johannesburg, is an experienced skills training provider. Like most well established organisations they’ve come to learn that all skills training must be coupled with life and job-readiness skills, if it’s to be really effective. In 2015, R500 000 was funded by the Old Mutual Foundation to provide accredited training to 20 youth in Fluid Hose Reeling, a course specialising in work with hydraulic hoses, which is a scarce skills on many mines.
