Board Members


The Masisizane board has a mix of representatives from Old Mutual (South Africa), empowerment partners (WIPHOLD and Brimstone) and external representatives, all of whom oversee the initiatives.

    MR BM Rapiya

    Chairman of the Board

    Marshall obtained a Bachelor of Administration (Economic Sciences) Degree from UNISA.

    He joined Old Mutual Group Schemes in 1977 as an Advisor in Umtata. In 1987 he was appointed Area Manager, then quickly moved through the ranks as Regional Manager Border and Transkei then Provincial Manager for the Eastern Cape in 1990.

    In 1995 he became Divisional Manager in charge of the Eastern and Western Cape as well as the National Scheme Development Team.

    Two years later he was given the responsibility of running the national sales force and marketing division and in 2000 Marshal was appointed General Manager – Group Schemes Sales and Marketing. In February 2005 he assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer Group Schemes.

    Following Paul Hanratty’s appointment as Managing Director, Marshall was appointed as Managing Director, Retail (Mass Market) in 2006 and in 2011 became Chief Executive Officer of Old Mutual South Africa.

    Mr MH Manjezi

    Chairman of the Flagship Ad Hoc Committee

    Mr Manjezi is a Divisional Executive of the Rural Development Partnerships Division (RDPD) within the Development Fund (DF), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).

    He obtained a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree from the University of Fort Hare (UFH); a Master of Business Leadership (MBL) & a Management Development Programme (MDP) from the University of South Africa (UNISA); and a Programme for Sustainable Leadership (Cambridge University).  He is also a Certified Director through the Institute of Directors South Africa.

    He is currently the chairman of the Advisory Management Board of Agriculture and Rural Development Research Institute (ARDRI) of the University of Fort Hare.

    Over the past ten years, he also served as director on behalf of government departments, his employers and on his personal capacity in four companies, namely: Asgisa Eastern Cape (Pty) Ltd (and a member of the audit as well the projects committee); Gerzikor (until it was incorporated into Eskom); and the Coega section 21 Company (before its conversion to Coega Development Corporation).  He was also an investment committee member of the African Rural Energy Enterprise Development (AREED) Initiative, an organization that is supported by the United Nation Foundation and the United Nations Environmental Programme.

    Mr Manjezi has a strong background and collective (twenty year) experience in all aspects of strategic planning and management; financial and institutional turnaround (including structured finance); facilitation and negotiations: people development and management; innovation; organizational transformation and design; development project preparation and financing across active economic sectors; and results monitoring and evaluation.

    He exhibits a high level of interpersonal interaction combined with sound problem analysis and solving capacity.  Mr Manjezi also has well-developed communication, planning and organization skills, with a strong aptitude to motivate and train high performance teams and individuals in order to transfer skills and execute strategies effectively.

    He has high levels of cognitive and emotional capacity and is versatile, adaptable and energetic. Though Mr Manjezi’s strong citizenry; a number of South Africans benefited from his candid mentorship, diligent skills development and experience transfer and empowerment, enabling them to achieve their personal and professional goals.  His leadership style is direct and firm with regard to the achievement of targets and goals.

    Mr PJ Golesworthy

    Chairman of the Investment and Finance Oversight Committee

    Peter graduated from Exeter University in the UK and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland.

    He spent 10 years with Anglo American Corporation (South Africa) in a corporate finance role, before joining Old Mutual in 1997. He was appointed Finance Director of Old Mutual South Africa in 2000, a position he held until he left to pursue his own interests in August 2007.

    He currently serves on a number of investment committees in the Old Mutual South Africa group (credit, private equity, agriculture and development assets) and is a director of a number of private companies.  He is a director of Life Healthcare Group Holdings, which he joined on the listing of the company in June 2010 and is the lead independent director and chairman of the Audit Committee.  He is a member of the Institute of Directors and a participant in its Audit Committee Forum Working Group.

    Ms DC Marsden

    Chairperson of the HR and Remuneration Committee

    Debra was General Manager: Corporate Affairs and Transformation of Old Mutual from 1997 to 2004.

    Prior to Old Mutual Debra had the following positions: Economic Affairs Director of the Consultative Business Movement, Secretariat Head of the National Economic Forum and Deputy Director of the National Economic Development and Labour Council Nedlac. She designed and implemented Old Mutual’s transformation programme and formed part of the 10-person negotiating team which developed the Financial Sector Charter.

    Debra joined WIPHOLD in 2005. Her portfolio includes assisting WIPHOLD and its investee companies with the development of transformative business strategies that align their business models to South Africa’s developmental challenges.

    Examples include the Imbizo Financial Inclusion strategy for rural areas, and the Centane Agricultural Initiative which is building a model for the sustainable commercial farming of communally owned land.

    Mr GM Ackerman

    Gareth Ackerman is the Chairman of South African retail chain Pick n Pay Stores.  As a family-controlled listed company founded by Raymond Ackerman in 1967, it is one of the region’s largest retailers in eight countries and employs over 60,000 people. Gareth is a board member of the controlling company board Pick n Pay Holdings Limited, and chairs his Family Office and Investment Committee.

    He is a member of the board of the Consumer Goods Forum and its Vice Co-Chair for 2013-2015 and the Chairman and co-founder of Pleiad Capital which engages in private equity investment, corporate finance, and strategic consulting.

    Gareth is a passionate contributor to the issue of global food security and sustainable development and is widely involved in philanthropy.

    Gareth Ackerman holds a Bachelor of Social Science from the University of Cape Town and a CMS from the University of Oxford and as Associate fellow at Green Templeton College Oxford lectures at a number of global universities.

    Mr F Robertson

    Fred Robertson serves as Executive Chairman of Brimstone Investment Corporation Ltd, a company which he co-founded in 1995. His Non-Executive chairmanships include Lion of Africa Insurance Company Limited, Lion of Africa Life Assurance Company Limited, Sea Harvest Limited, Novus Holdings Limited, and House of Monatic. He also serves as non-executive director on the boards of Remgro Limited, Aon Re Africa (Pty) Limited, Old Mutual Emerging Markets Limited, Swiss Re South Africa, and ASX-listed Mareterram Ltd.

    Fred’s trusteeships and patronages include, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Western Cape Foundation; Interim Chairman of the Jakes Gerwel Foundation; Member of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology Entrepreneurship Advisory Board; Trustee of the Masizizane Fund; Patron to the South African Academy for Young Leaders; and Patron to the Youth Unemployment Peoples Project.

     

    Fred received the CNBC AFRICA All Africa Business Leadership Awards (AABLA) Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2014. In April 2016 Fred was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy by the University of the Western Cape. In September 2016 Fred received the Kaapstad Sakekamer Die Burger Sakeleier 2016 Award.

    Ms CWL Phalatse

    Lorato holds a BA (Hons) Degree in Political Science from the University of Leeds UK and completed her MA Southern African Development Studies in 1985 at the University of York UK.

    After graduating in the United Kingdom and returning to South Africa in 1985, Lorato have over the last 27 years of her career been extremely fortunate to gain valuable experience in the Private sector, Government and work for Non Governmental Organizations. This has given her insight into the discipline of industry, the complexity of government and taught her the humility of working with community groups in trying to change their lives for the better.

    Over the years she developed strong skills in strategic and operational management, retail banking and investments, community management and development and served her country in the highest office in the land, the President’s office.

    She recently started her own business, The BeadGirls(Pty)Ltd producing high end African arts and crafts. She works with rural women crafters creating pieces for the interior décor and corporate gift markets. She is married and a mother of two teenage boys, love reading and taking walks with her four dogs.

    Ms GT Serobe

    Gloria was born in Guguletu, Cape Town on 20 September 1959. She obtained a B.Com degree from the University of Transkei and holds an MBA degree from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA.

    She is a Founding Member and Executive Director of WIPHOLD and Chief Executive Officer of Wipcapital. Her professional experience includes positions at Exxon Corporation in the USA, Munich Reinsurance Company of SA, the Premier Group and Standard Corporate and Merchant Bank. She was the Executive Director – Finance, Transnet Limited and was a member of the Transnet Board and its major subsidiaries.

    She serves on several Boards including Sasol Mining, Hans Merensky and Old Mutual Emerging Markets. She is a trustee of several trusts including the WIPHOLD NGO Trust and WIPHOLD Investment Trust. She is an honorary member of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and is a member of the SAICA Advisory Council.

    Her previous non-executive Directorships include Chairman of the Board of the Independent Ports Regulator, Chairman of the Life Office’s Association (LOA), Chairman of the Metropolitan Group, Old Mutual, Nedbank, Export Credit Insurance Corporation, Airports Company South Africa, Express Kenya Limited, M-Cell, MTN, the Financial Markets Advisory Board and the JSE. She was Chairman of the Transnet Second Defined Benefit Fund (Pensioner only Fund) and the Transnet Pension Fund Investment Committee and was also a Trustee of the South African Airways Share Trust, Transnet Retirement Fund (DC Fund) and Transnet Pension Fund (DB Fund).

    Mr SH Somdyala

    Simpiwe has worked as capacity development manager at AMSCO BV, an implementation arm of the African Training Management Services, a project established by the United Nations Development Programme and the International Finance Corporation. He also worked as the Eastern Cape Development Corporation’s regional manager (ECDC) in its Mthatha office before being seconded by the ECDC to the Presidential Project Team, where he served as economic development co-ordinator and team leader from 1995 to 1999.

    Simpiwe has a BCom degree majoring in economics, Honours BCom with an MBA.  He has Gordon Institute of Business Science and executive training in building national competitiveness.  As CEO, he lead the Masisizane Team from 2012 and in June 2016 took up responsibility as Head of Corporate Affairs, Governance Cluster, Old Mutual.

    J Baepi

    Director: Governance, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs

    Joel obtained his Master of Laws Corporate Law from the University of Johannesburg in 2006 after being admitted as attorney of the High Court of SA in 1998 and studying law at the University of Cape Town.

    He joined Old Mutual in 2011 as Chief Legal Adviser and was promoted to Director: Governance, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs in 2015, the position he currently holds. Some highlights of his career includes being a member of the advisory board for the Law Faculty, University of Cape Town, Director of General Motors South Africa, member of the management committee, Cliffe Dekker, recruitment Committee and employment equity committee at Bowman Gilfillan Inc, and being a founder member and president of the Black Law Students’ Forum at UCT.

    Joel grew up in the North West province and is fluent in English, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, Afrikaans, isiXhosa and isiZulu.

    Mr K Gamieldien

    Kieyam qualified as a Chartered Accountant with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants after graduating from the University of Cape Town. Kieyam started his career with ENS specialising in Tax Advisory focusing on the financial services industry. Kieyam joined Old Mutual during 2005 and worked in Group Tax and Corporate Finance divisions.

    In 2009 Kieyam was appointed as the General Manager: Group Tax at Metropolitan Holdings and subsequently in the same role for MMI Holdings. During 2012 Kieyam return to Old Mutual and was appointed the Head of Guaranteed Investment Products.

    Kieyam was appointed in 2016 to Head up the Shareholder Investments team responsible for investment strategies underlying shareholder capital across Old Mutual Emerging Markets. He serves on a number of shareholder and policyholder investment committees.

    Ms Z Nyanga

    CEO of Masisizane Fund

    Zizipho, a qualified CA(SA), started her career with Ernst & Young in 2004 as a Trainee Accountant focusing on the Retail and Pharmaceutical Industries.  Ernst & Young’s global footprint afforded her the opportunity to audit American based companies such as Data Domain and Xenoport Inc whilst she was seconded to the San Jose office in California.  At the end of 2007 she joined Kagiso Media as a Financial Manager and in 2008 strated an investment company, Motlalepula Investments together with three other shareholders.

    She returned to Ernst & Young in 2009 and worked in both Audit and Advisory Departments as Senior Audit Manager.  In order to further enhance her entrepreneurial skills and abmitions, Zizipho joined the iDC as Dealmaker in 2012.  This is where she gained vast experience in the pre-investment and healthcare businesses, responsible for financial modeling and deal structuring of hospitals, medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing deals.

    Zizipho joined Masisizane in September 2014 as Head of Post Investment Monitoring and Business Support and stepped into the role of CEO in October 2016.
